Brighton confirm permanent exit for key defender after two years

Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed Rachel McLauchlan has joined Newcastle United on a permanent transfer.

The Scotland international leaves after two seasons on the south coast, having made 48 appearances and scored twice.

McLauchlan joined Albion from Rangers in July 2024 and became an important member of Dario Vidosic’s squad.

The 29-year-old helped Brighton secure their highest-ever Women’s Super League finish in 2025 before playing in the club’s first Women’s FA Cup final in May.

Brighton’s official announcement confirmed the transfer remains subject to the usual regulatory processes.

Vidosic praises McLauchlan contribution

Vidosic described McLauchlan as a key figure during her two years at the club.

The Brighton head coach praised her commitment and highlighted the role she played during two significant seasons for the women’s team.

McLauchlan can operate at full-back or wing-back and brings Newcastle considerable top-flight and international experience.

The Magpies have confirmed she joins for an undisclosed fee as they continue strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Her departure creates another decision for Brighton during an already busy summer.

Albion have added several new players, including Sophie Peskett, Lia Wälti, Eleanor Heeps, Nadia Krezyman and Emilie Joramo.

As Read Brighton reported following Peskett’s arrival, Vidosic has been reshaping his squad with younger and more dynamic options.

McLauchlan leaves having contributed to one of the strongest periods in Brighton Women’s history.

Her consistency, versatility and experience will now support Newcastle, while Brighton must decide whether another defensive addition is required before the season begins.
