Brighton Departures Confirmed As Veltman Talks Continue

Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed that Solly March, Adam Webster and James Milner will leave the club at the end of June, giving Albion supporters a clearer picture of the summer reset now under way. The Brighton departures confirmed by the club matter because they remove three experienced voices from Fabian Hurzeler’s squad at the same time as talks with Joel Veltman remain open.

The club announcement, published after the Premier League’s released and retained lists, confirmed March, Webster and Milner are heading for the exit when their contracts expire. Brighton also made clear that Veltman’s future is not closed, saying discussions with the Dutch defender are continuing.

That is the supporter-useful point. This is not simply a farewell post. Albion are preparing for a European campaign, and the loss of senior dressing-room experience will shape how supporters read the rest of the transfer window.

Why Brighton’s Retained List Matters Now

Brighton’s official update says chairman Tony Bloom has paid tribute to the three departing players, recognising their part in what the club described as the most successful period in its history. Supporters can read the full Brighton confirmation here.

March is the most emotional exit. He has been part of Albion for more than 15 years, and his connection with supporters goes far beyond one contract decision. Bloom said: “His loyalty and commitment have been outstanding throughout.” That line lands because March’s Brighton career has carried promotion, Premier League establishment, European nights and brutal injury setbacks.

Webster’s departure is different but still significant. He joined in 2019 and was part of the side’s evolution into a possession-based Premier League team. His recent injury record reduced his role, yet he still leaves as a defender who helped Albion move from survival thinking to top-half ambition.

Milner’s exit had already felt likely after his retirement decision, which ReadBrighton covered in our piece on Brighton’s record-breaking Premier League veteran. His time at the Amex was shorter, but his standards and experience mattered during a season that ended with Albion back in Europe.

The Veltman Detail Is The One To Watch

The most important live strand is Veltman. The Premier League’s released list includes Joel Veltman among Brighton free transfers, but the league also warns that each list “should not be seen as definitive” if a player’s status changes or a new contract is agreed.

That caveat matters because Brighton’s own wording is more careful. Albion say talks with Veltman over his future are ongoing. In other words, supporters should not read the league list as final confirmation that Veltman has gone.

For Hurzeler, keeping Veltman would make sense if the terms work. Brighton are already managing defensive transfer noise around Jan Paul van Hecke, and ReadBrighton has looked at how Albion’s Vuskovic move raises a Van Hecke question. Losing Webster and potentially Veltman in the same summer would put even more pressure on recruitment and squad planning.

What Albion Supporters Should Take From It

The headline is that Brighton’s squad is getting younger and less familiar. That is not automatically a problem; Albion’s model has been built on renewal, timing and moving players on before sentiment clouds the decision. But supporters are entitled to ask where the experience comes from next.

Lewis Dunk remains the obvious leader, while Danny Welbeck, Jason Steele and Pascal Gross still offer senior know-how. Even so, March, Webster and Milner leaving in the same window changes the dressing-room balance. It also strengthens the case for at least one experienced addition if Veltman does not stay.

ReadBrighton had already explored the wider question in our look at why Brighton face a major rebuild after Europe qualification. This confirmation adds names and certainty to that process.

For now, there are two things to separate. March, Webster and Milner are confirmed departures. Veltman is not yet in the same category, despite appearing on the Premier League list. Until Brighton announce the outcome of those talks, the safest reading is that Albion’s summer clear-out is real, but one important senior defender decision remains unresolved.
