Premier League transfer window 2026: Key dates and Deadline Day

Share
  • Premier League transfer window opens on June 15
  • Deadline Day set for September 1 at 11pm BST
  • World Cup expected to impact summer transfer business

Premier League and EFL clubs are preparing for one of the most complex transfer windows in recent memory, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to overlap with a crucial period of summer recruitment.

Football’s global showpiece, taking place across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will see many of England’s leading stars away on international duty just as clubs attempt to reshape their squads ahead of the new season. Despite the logistical challenges, clubs are preparing for another busy summer after Premier League spending surged beyond £3 billion last year and set a new record.

With sporting directors, managers and recruitment teams facing a delicate balancing act, the countdown to the summer trading period is already underway.

Transfer window opens on June 15

Premier League and EFL clubs will officially be able to register new signings from Monday, June 15.

While clubs can negotiate and agree deals beforehand, they cannot formally complete transfers until the window opens. Clubs are already lining up a number of deals for completion once the market opens, including permanent transfers linked to loan agreements struck in previous windows.

September 1 marks Deadline Day

This summer’s transfer deadline falls on Tuesday, September 1, with clubs having until 11pm BST to complete their business.

The later cut-off represents a return to the traditional late-night finish after recent seasons saw an earlier closing time introduced to ease workloads for football staff. This year, however, executives, agents and club officials can expect another frantic evening as last-minute negotiations go down to the wire.

Teams that submit the necessary documentation before the deadline will still have an additional two-hour grace period to finalise outstanding paperwork.

Overseas windows could create late exits

Even after the English transfer window closes, some clubs may remain vulnerable to losing players abroad.

Major European leagues will shut around the same period. Spain’s LaLiga transfer window closes at 10.59pm on September 1, while Italy’s Serie A concludes business at 7pm on the same day. Germany’s Bundesliga and France’s Ligue 1 will both close 24 hours earlier on August 31.

Elsewhere, opportunities will remain available. The Dutch Eredivisie and Major League Soccer continue until September 2, Türkiye’s transfer window remains open until September 4 and clubs in the Saudi Pro League can recruit players until October 12.

That extended timeline could leave English sides fielding interest in their players long after domestic recruitment has ended.

Women’s Super League transfer dates confirmed

Women’s Super League clubs will begin their summer transfer activity on June 18.

The WSL window will remain open until September 3, giving clubs an extended period to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

How the Premier League transfer window could be affected by the World Cup

The expanded World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 and is expected to have a major impact on transfer strategies throughout the game.

Many Premier League stars will be involved deep into the tournament, potentially delaying negotiations, medicals and pre-season integration for clubs hoping to complete major signings.

Key dates for the 2026-27 season

Attention will quickly turn from the transfer market to preparations for the new campaign.

Premier League fixtures are scheduled to be released on June 19, with EFL fixtures following on June 25.

The EFL season gets underway on August 14, although competitive action begins a week earlier with the opening round of the Carabao Cup on August 7.

Premier League clubs will kick off the new season on August 22, a week later than the previous campaign to allow players additional recovery time following the World Cup.

The 2026-27 Premier League season will conclude on May 30, 2027, providing a one-week gap before the Champions League final and bringing another landmark campaign to a close.
