- James Milner retires aged 40
- Premier League record 658 appearances
- Three-year spell at Brighton
James Milner has announced his retirement from football, bringing the curtain down on one of the most remarkable careers English football has seen.
The Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder confirmed his decision on Monday morning after 24 Premier League seasons, ending a career that spanned more than two decades and saw him become the competition’s all-time appearance holder with 658 matches.
Milner joined Brighton in the summer of 2023 following his departure from Liverpool and immediately became one of the most experienced figures in the dressing room.
Although injuries limited his impact during parts of his three-year spell on the south coast, the former England international still played an important role in helping guide a young squad through one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
A record-breaking Premier League career comes to an end
His final campaign ended in fitting fashion as Brighton secured qualification for European football for only the second time in club history.
In a statement announcing his retirement, Milner reflected on the journey that began at boyhood club Leeds United.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” he said.
“From making my debut for Leeds United, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on, right through to not being able to lift my foot last year and then coming back to be part of Brighton qualifying for Europe for the second time in their history at the age of 40.”
Brighton role defined by leadership and experience
Milner represented Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton throughout a career that delivered three Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, two World Cups and two European Championship appearances with England.
His most decorated years came at Manchester City and Liverpool, where he won multiple major honours and established himself as one of the game’s most respected professionals.
Yet his Brighton chapter carried its own significance.
Signed initially to add experience to Roberto De Zerbi’s Europa League squad, Milner became a mentor for younger players throughout the club. Even after injury setbacks threatened to derail his final years in the game, he fought back to contribute during Fabian Hurzeler’s first season in charge.

Milner reflects on extraordinary journey
“To have gone on to represent Newcastle, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool and Brighton has been an incredible privilege,” Milner added.
“I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined.”
While his playing career is now over, Milner departs as one of the Premier League’s greatest servants and a player whose professionalism left a lasting impression wherever he played.
