Brighton & Hove Albion are set to receive a significant sell-on payment as Ipswich Town close in on former Seagulls goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
Ipswich are in advanced talks with Union Saint-Gilloise over a permanent deal for the Netherlands international. Scherpen has already reached an agreement in principle over personal terms.
According to Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof, Brighton negotiated a 40% sell-on clause when they sold the goalkeeper to Union last summer.
The final payment due to Albion will depend on the transfer fee and the precise structure of the clause. However, Union are expected to receive a multi-million-pound sum if negotiations with Ipswich are completed.
Brighton transfer clause could deliver major return
Scherpen joined Brighton from Ajax in 2021 but made only one competitive first-team appearance for the club.
The 26-year-old spent time on loan with Oostende, Vitesse and Sturm Graz before completing a permanent move to Union in July 2025. He established himself in Belgium and made 32 appearances across all competitions last season.
Ipswich now view the 6ft 9in goalkeeper as a potential first-choice option following their promotion to the Premier League. Talks between the clubs are progressing, although the transfer has not yet been officially announced.
A sizeable sell-on payment would provide another example of Brighton protecting the value of players who leave the Amex.
Albion continue to make decisions across their goalkeeping department. ReadBrighton recently reported that the club must settle Carl Rushworth’s future after Newcastle opened talks, while James Beadle and Nils Ramming have secured loan moves.
Scherpen’s proposed return to England could now deliver Brighton an unexpected financial lift without requiring the club to sanction another first-team departure.
