Brighton hand Rio Ferdinand’s son first professional contract

Brighton & Hove Albion have handed Tate Ferdinand his first professional contract as part of 11 academy decisions confirmed by the club.

The 17-year-old is the son of former England and Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand.

Tate joined Brighton in July 2024 and has since established himself as a left-sided defender within the club’s under-18 side.

He has also captained the team and earned praise for his communication, composure in possession and passing range.

Brighton’s academy confirmed that Ferdinand has committed his future alongside Sebastian Ademola, Isaiah Alakiu, Adam Brett, Liam Crutchett, Younes Ibrahim, Henry Kasvosve, Jesse Middleton and Theo Outen.

Recent arrivals Oliver Mayer and George Munday complete the group of 11 players signing their first professional terms.

The announcement underlines Brighton’s continued commitment to protecting the strongest prospects within their development system.

Ferdinand continues family pathway at Brighton

Tate is the second member of the Ferdinand family to sign professional terms with Albion.

His older brother Lorenz, a goalkeeper, agreed his first professional contract in 2025 after progressing through Brighton’s academy and gaining senior experience with Havant & Waterlooville.

Tate plays in the same position as his father, but Brighton have worked to ensure he develops without unrealistic comparisons shaping his progress.

His comfort on the ball fits the profile Albion demand from their centre-backs, who are expected to contribute during build-up as well as defend effectively.

As Read Brighton reported after Oliver Mayer’s arrival, the club have continued adding young players who possess the technical qualities required by their first-team structure.

There is no immediate expectation that Ferdinand will enter Fabian Hürzeler’s senior squad.

The contract instead gives Brighton time to continue his development through academy football, under-21 opportunities and potentially a carefully selected loan.

For Ferdinand, it represents the first major professional milestone of a career Brighton believe is worth investing in.
