- Brighton are targeting a highly rated Toulouse centre-back
- The Seagulls are looking to strengthen an already impressive defence
- A summer deal could see the defender return to the Premier League
Brighton are reportedly preparing another move in the transfer market with Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell emerging as a key target ahead of the summer window.
The Seagulls enjoyed another competitive Premier League campaign despite narrowly falling short of European qualification. A strong finish saw Fabian Hurzeler’s side miss out on seventh place by just one point, leaving the south coast club within touching distance of a return to continental football.
Brighton keen to strengthen at the back
One of Brighton’s biggest strengths throughout the season was their defensive resilience. Only Arsenal and Manchester City conceded fewer goals across the league, underlining the effectiveness of a back line that regularly featured Jan Paul van Hecke, Lewis Dunk, Mats Wieffer and Ferdi Kadioglu.
Even so, Brighton appear determined to strengthen further as they look to build a squad capable of challenging once again near the top end of the table.

Cresswell emerges as a summer target
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the club have renewed their interest in Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell. The 23-year-old has impressed during his time in France and is understood to be firmly on Brighton’s radar.
Cresswell established himself as a key figure for Toulouse last season, making 32 Ligue 1 appearances and earning a reputation as one of the club’s most dependable performers. His ability to read the game was reflected in 31 interceptions while his physical presence helped him win 15 tackles during the campaign.
Why Brighton value Ligue 1’s top defenders
Brighton’s recruitment model has often focused on identifying talented players before their market value rises significantly and Cresswell appears to fit that profile.
The former Leeds United academy graduate combines Premier League experience with the added maturity gained during his spell in France. His performances have helped elevate his reputation among Ligue 1’s top defenders and attracted interest from clubs looking to reinforce their back lines.

Transfer fee could prove sticking point
Brighton previously saw a bid worth €23 million fall short during the January transfer window and reports suggest Toulouse are likely to demand a higher fee if negotiations resume this summer.
If Brighton complete a deal for Cresswell, the defender will return to the Premier League with valuable Ligue 1 experience and give the Seagulls another strong option at the heart of their defence as they push to secure a European place.
