- Brighton interest in Patrick Wimmer has ended without a formal bid
- Hoffenheim activated his €10m release clause following Wolfsburg’s relegation
- The Austrian winger is set to sign a long-term deal in Germany
Brighton & Hove Albion’s interest in Patrick Wimmer has ended with no agreement, as the Austrian winger closes in on a move to TSG Hoffenheim instead.
Sky Germany reported that Hoffenheim have reached a full agreement with VfL Wolfsburg after activating Wimmer’s €10 million release clause, which became available following Wolfsburg’s relegation. The 25-year-old is expected to undergo his medical on Wednesday before signing a long-term contract running until 2031.
Why Brighton were interested in Patrick Wimmer
For Brighton, it is another example of a player linked earlier in the window moving quickly once a release clause becomes active. Wimmer had been monitored by multiple clubs across Europe, including Brighton, Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt, but it is Hoffenheim who have moved decisively to complete the deal.
Brighton’s interest, as previously reported, was never at an advanced stage. There was no formal bid or late attempt to hijack negotiations, despite the player’s profile fitting the club’s recruitment model.
Wimmer’s appeal was clear. A direct, high-intensity winger capable of operating across multiple attacking roles, he has developed into a consistent performer at Wolfsburg. His ability to carry the ball in transition, press aggressively and contribute in wide areas made him a natural fit for Brighton.
Why Brighton stepped away from the deal
However, the club stepped back once Hoffenheim triggered the clause and moved quickly to secure full agreement.
That decision reflects Brighton’s broader approach in recent windows. Rather than entering bidding wars or reacting late to market developments, the club have increasingly prioritised early positioning or walking away when valuation curves rise too quickly.
Wimmer now departs Wolfsburg after a difficult final season that ended in relegation, but his move to Hoffenheim offers stability and a long-term project, with the club reportedly offering a deal until 2031.

Hoffenheim win the race for the Austrian winger
For Brighton, the search for wide attacking depth continues, particularly with uncertainty surrounding several forward options heading into the new season. While Wimmer was on the radar, he was never considered an essential target at any stage of negotiations.
The Seagulls will now shift focus elsewhere in the market as they continue preparations for another season balancing domestic and European football.
