- Adam Webster set to leave Brighton when contract expires
- Defender has missed entire season due to ACL injury
- Made 158 appearances since joining from Bristol City
Brighton & Hove Albion defender Adam Webster will leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, according to The Athletic, bringing an end to a seven-year spell at the Amex.
The 31-year-old has not featured at all this season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a pre-season training camp in Spain last July, and is now set to depart by mutual consent once his deal runs out.
Webster’s Brighton Career in Numbers
Webster joined Brighton in 2019 from Bristol City for a then-club-record fee of around £20 million, arriving as one of the most highly rated defenders outside the Premier League. He has since gone on to make 158 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls, scoring eight goals.
His time at the club has been shaped by both injury setbacks and periods of strong form. Webster previously suffered an ankle issue in 2021 that interrupted momentum just as he was being monitored for a potential England call-up under former manager Gareth Southgate.
Across multiple managers, he remained a key figure when available. He played 94 times under Graham Potter, featured 44 times during the Roberto De Zerbi era, and made 20 appearances last season under Fabian Hurzeler, where he often stepped into an important leadership role.
Webster’s Stint as Skipper
Webster’s influence was particularly clear in moments of defensive crisis. One standout example came last season when he replaced Lewis Dunk at half-time in an FA Cup tie against Chelsea, helping stabilise a back line in transition. His ability to organise, lead and distribute from deep made him a valuable option both as a centre-back and occasional captain.
His final appearance came on the last day of the 2024/25 season, a 4-1 win away at Tottenham, where he captained the side and delivered an all-action performance, registering 125 touches, winning all six of his aerial duels and making multiple defensive contributions.
Hurzeler previously described Webster as “a big blow” when his injury was confirmed, highlighting his leadership and importance within the squad.

Brighton Defensive Rebuild Begins
His departure forms part of a wider defensive reshuffle at Brighton this summer. There is uncertainty around several centre-backs, with possible exits and changes expected across the back line as the club looks to refresh options ahead of next season.
Players such as Jan Paul van Hecke and Igor Julio are linked with a move away this summer, while Brighton have already begun planning for the next phase of their defensive rebuild.
