After years away from the international spotlight Danny Welbeck is reportedly on course for a surprise England return as Thomas Tuchel prepares to finalise his provisional squad for the World Cup.
Thomas Tuchel plans to name the Brighton forward in his expanded 55 man World Cup longlist ahead of next summer’s tournament in one of the season’s biggest selection surprises.
Welbeck has not represented England since a 1-0 friendly victory over Switzerland in September 2018. Nearly eight years on the experienced striker appears ready to force his way back into the national picture through sheer persistence and impressive form.

Danny Welbeck Revival Turns Heads
Now 35 the former Manchester United and Arsenal forward is producing arguably the finest football of his career.
Welbeck has struck 14 goals in all competitions this season which marks his best return in a single campaign. In the Premier League alone he has scored 13 times placing him among the top scoring English players in the division.
His resurgence has been central to Brighton’s remarkable push for European qualification under manager Fabian Hürzeler.
With only two matches remaining the Seagulls remain firmly in contention for a place in next season’s Champions League and Welbeck’s influence has been impossible to ignore.
Thomas Tuchel Faces Key Selection Decisions
England manager Thomas Tuchel will confirm his final squad on May 22 as attention turns to who can support captain Harry Kane in attack.
Tuchel overlooked Danny Welbeck in March and selected Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke instead.
Ollie Watkins also missed out despite another productive campaign with Aston Villa.
However Welbeck’s consistency intelligent movement and clinical finishing appear to have convinced Tuchel to reconsider the veteran striker ahead of football’s biggest stage.

Luke Shaw and Jarrad Branthwaite Also Included
Elsewhere Luke Shaw is also expected to feature in the provisional squad despite his long running injury struggles.
The Manchester United defender has remained involved regularly this season under both Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick.
Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is another player tipped to make the wider group after impressing whenever fit.
Although the 23 year old has made only 10 league appearances this season his performances have strengthened Everton’s push towards European football at the Hill Dickinson Stadium next term.
For Welbeck though this story carries extra weight. A player once viewed as England’s future now has the chance to complete a remarkable international comeback just when many believed that chapter had long since closed.
