Veltman Deadline Forces Brighton Into Right-Back Call

Joel Veltman’s Brighton future has reached the point where the calendar is now part of the story.

The Premier League’s released list placed Veltman among Albion’s free transfers, with the league making clear that contracts in that category expired on 30 June but could still be followed by a new agreement. Brighton’s own update had already confirmed that Solly March, James Milner and Adam Webster would depart, while talks with Veltman were ongoing.

Fabian Hurzeler Has One Clear Defensive Decision

That leaves Fabian Hurzeler with a sharper right-back call as pre-season planning tightens. Albion have already agreed the signing of Costinha from Olympiacos, and the club described the Portuguese defender as a player who will add competition at right-back.

The issue is not only numbers. Veltman has been one of Brighton’s more trusted defensive organisers, particularly in games where Albion need calm positioning rather than full-back chaos. If no fresh deal follows, Costinha’s adaptation period becomes more urgent and Hurzeler loses a senior reference point in a back line already being reshaped.

Brighton can still solve it, but the July 1 deadline removes any sense of background noise. Veltman is now a live squad-management decision, and the answer will shape how quickly Albion can stabilise the right side before European football returns.
