Bart Verbruggen Faces Brighton Test Under Premier League Eight-Second Rule

Bart Verbruggen has a new Brighton detail to master before the Premier League restarts: the clock is now part of the goalkeeper’s job description.

The Premier League has confirmed its 2026/27 football principles, with stronger measures against time-wasting and delayed restarts. The key Brighton wrinkle is clear: if a team delays a goal-kick, the opposition can be awarded a corner.

The goalkeeper-specific issue comes from the wider IFAB law change. IFAB confirmed that a corner kick can be awarded if a goalkeeper controls the ball with their hands or arms for more than eight seconds, with referees using a visible five-second countdown.

That matters for Verbruggen because Brighton build so much of their possession rhythm through him. Opta Analyst records that the Dutchman has played more than 90 Premier League matches since his competition debut, while his composure under pressure remains central to Fabian Hurzeler’s first phase.

Verbruggen’s Margin Gets Smaller

The adjustment is not about panic. It is about removing dead moments.

If opponents press Brighton high, Verbruggen will need earlier passing pictures, cleaner centre-back angles and sharper full-back support. One extra touch too many could now hand pressure straight back through a set-piece.

That changes the feel of pre-season work. For a Brighton side expected to chase European places, distribution drills are no longer just about bravery and accuracy.

They are also about speed.

Read Brighton has already looked at how Verbruggen’s World Cup knockout run gave Albion a wider contract reminder. This rule change adds a narrower, practical point.

Brighton’s goalkeeper cannot just be brave on the ball. He has to be quick with it.
