- Brighton under-21s crowned Premier League 2 champions after beating Manchester United
- Shannon Ruth highlights winning mentality demanded by Fabian Hurzeler
- Young Albion talents now target first-team breakthroughs at the Amex
Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-21 stars celebrated Premier League 2 glory at the Amex Stadium but attention has already turned towards the next challenge facing the club’s brightest young talents.
The Seagulls defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the play-off final to lift the title after navigating four tense knockout ties in impressive fashion.
While silverware marked a memorable moment for the academy setup, the wider objective remains unchanged. Brighton want these players pushing towards Fabian Hurzeler’s first team or generating valuable transfer fees in the years ahead.
Shannon Ruth outlines Brighton mentality
Under-21s boss Shannon Ruth believes the experience of competing in high pressure knockout matches can play a major role in shaping players mentally for senior football.
Speaking after the victory over Manchester United, Ruth explained how important winning environments can be in developing future first-team players.
“It gives them an experience,” Ruth told The Argus.
“We speak about winning mentality and, when it comes to developing players, winning isn’t the be-all-and-end-all but trying to develop a winning mentality for a player, that’s crucial.
“The only way you can really, I think, develop a winning mentality is to put them in these experiences, on nights like this, and you win or you lose.”

Fabian Hurzeler demands commitment from young players
Ruth also revealed the standards Hurzeler expects from anyone hoping to break into Brighton’s senior squad.
The under-21s coach stressed that talent alone will not secure opportunities under the German head coach.
“I can tell you for sure that, when they go and play out here for Fabian, he wants them to run through a wall,” Ruth said.
“He wants them to be team-first, and do everything they possibly can to get over the line and win three points.
“We have to be a middle ground for that development.
“We can’t say that winning doesn’t matter because tomorrow one of these could be playing for our first team.”
Ruth believes balancing development with competitive pressure remains a key part of Brighton’s academy philosophy.
Miah Oriola catches the eye again
One player who stood out in the final was Miah Oriola, who delivered an energetic display against his former club.
Oriola has already received a taste of senior football this season after making a brief Premier League debut in Brighton’s home victory over Leeds United.
Ruth praised the youngster’s intensity and willingness to contribute defensively, qualities that appear increasingly important under Hurzeler’s system.
“Motivation is not a problem for Miah, I’ll tell you that for sure,” Ruth said.
“His hunger for the game, his love for the game, but his absolute appetite to repeat high-level action after high-level action.
“Not only did he impress everyone going that way but, boy, did he defend?”
Brighton youngsters must prove defensive discipline
Ruth made it clear that young attacking players must also demonstrate discipline and reliability without the ball if they want to earn senior opportunities.
The Brighton academy coach believes defensive commitment could ultimately determine which prospects make the leap into the Premier League squad.
“They need to show their quality but they have also got to show they can be trusted and they can help keep the ball out of the net,” Ruth added.
