  • Tariq Lamptey could leave Fiorentina after one season
  • The former Brighton defender has been ruined by injury
  • The Ghana international made 122 appearances for Albion

Tariq Lamptey’s first season away from Brighton has taken another difficult turn after an injury-hit spell in Italy.

Lamptey left Albion last summer after five-and-a-half years on the south coast. At the time, the move looked like a fresh start for the former England youth international.

Fitness was a challenge for the right-back in the Premier League as he struggled to build rhythm in England. Likewise, Fiorentina offered Lamptey a new challenge in the Serie A.

However, the 25-year-old’s move to Florence has not worked out as planned. Unfortunately, his time in Italy now appears to be heading towards an early conclusion.

Tariq Lamptey Set To Leave Fiorentina

Tariq Lamptey is reportedly set to cut short his time with Fiorentina after an injury-hit first season in Southern Europe.

According to reports in Italy, including La Gazzetta dello Sport, Lamptey and Fiorentina are close to reaching an agreement over the remaining years on his contract.

Following his move to La Viola last summer, the Ghana international has only made two appearances for the club.

That has now left both parties moving towards a possible mutual termination. Likewise, it would make Lamptey a free agent after just one season in Serie A.

Injury Ruins Lamptey’s Fiorentina Move

Lamptey’s Fiorentina spell didn’t start as he would’ve expected. The right-back made a brief debut against Napoli, where he played just three minutes.

Later, he started against Como in September, but the Ghana international probably wasn’t expecting what he was about to experience.

He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in his left knee and could only manage 22 minutes against Como.

Lamptey then underwent surgery, but the setback effectively ruined his first campaign abroad. Born in England, the defender never left the Isles for football.

The pattern continues for Lamptey as injuries were the reason why his time at Brighton came to an end after almost six years.

Former Brighton Defender Faces Huge Setback

This is a sad development for the 25-year-old. He came through Chelsea’s academy and was one of the most promising talents when Brighton signed him in 2020.

His pace, energy, and attacking threat from the right-back position made him a dangerous option, especially in advanced roles.

The 2021/22 season was probably one of his best in terms of overall availability. He had a per 90 xA of 0.17, ranking in the top 11% right-backs of the Premier League.

Lamptey also created 0.29 chances and successfully dribbled 1.68 times per 90 that season. He also won 2.89 fouls per 90, ranking in the top 2.7% of right-backs in the English top-flight.

Regardless, Lamptey now faces another difficult reset at a crucial stage of his career. The talent was never the question, but his next move will be about finding stability.
