Ornstein explains why United have cooled Carlos Baleba interest

Manchester United are reportedly assessing better-value alternatives to Carlos Baleba after the Brighton midfielder endured a less influential 2025/26 season.

United have admired the Cameroon international for some time, but Brighton’s valuation remains a major obstacle to any move.

Speaking about the situation, The Athletic’s David Ornstein questioned whether United would commit a significant fee after Baleba’s form dipped last season.

“They are weighing up other targets that may be a bit better value for money in their mind,” Ornstein said.

“Brighton always sell for high. If you are going to pay that sort of price, are you going to do it for somebody that maybe has taken a bit of a dip?”

Baleba made 31 Premier League appearances last season, starting 23 times, but did not register a goal or assist.

Brighton remain under no pressure to sell Baleba

United’s hesitation does not necessarily weaken Brighton’s position.

Baleba remains an important part of Fabian Hürzeler’s midfield and has already returned for pre-season training. ReadBrighton recently reported that no formal United proposal had been submitted, despite continued reports about the player’s interest in a move.

The 22-year-old still offers qualities that are difficult to find. His power, ball-winning ability and capacity to carry possession through pressure made him one of Brighton’s standout performers during the previous campaign.

A quieter season has introduced greater uncertainty over whether another club would meet Brighton’s asking price now.

United appear unwilling to pay a premium based solely on Baleba’s potential, particularly when Michael Carrick’s midfield rebuild has already included the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

From Brighton’s perspective, keeping Baleba may be preferable to accepting a reduced offer.

The Seagulls have consistently shown they will only sell leading players when their valuation is met. Ornstein’s comments suggest United understand that position and are currently looking elsewhere rather than preparing to challenge it.
