Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Jason Steele will be part of the England camp tonight as Thomas Tuchel’s side chase a place in the World Cup final against Argentina.
According to the FIFA World Cup match centre, England’s semi-final against Argentina kicks off at 8pm BST at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with the winner facing Spain in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium. Jason Steele has been with Tuchel’s squad throughout the tournament as a training goalkeeper alongside Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford, having first linked up with the group in March.
Jude Bellingham Brace Sent England Past Norway And Into The Last Four
England reached the semi-final courtesy of a dramatic 2-1 extra-time win over Norway on 11 July, with Jude Bellingham scoring both goals, including the winner just three minutes into extra-time after Norway had levelled through Antonio Schjelderup.
Argentina came through an even more eventful last-eight tie, beating Switzerland 3-1 after extra-time in Kansas City. Julian Alvarez’s stunning strike and a late Lautaro Martinez finish settled it after Switzerland had been reduced to ten men.
Steele’s role at the tournament has been a supporting one rather than a playing part, but Tuchel made a point of publicly thanking Brighton for releasing him for the role. “I want to take the opportunity to thank Jason for being brilliant and thank Brighton for being so co-operative and supportive,” the England boss said of the goalkeeper’s involvement with the squad.
Spain are already through to Sunday’s final after beating France 2-0 in Dallas on Monday, meaning victory tonight would send Steele and the rest of Tuchel’s staff into a first World Cup final since 1966. Brighton had eight players named among the club’s World Cup contingent this summer, with Steele now the last one still involved.
