Tottenham Target Brighton Midfielder Matt O’Riley Amid Summer Interest

Matt O’Riley’s Brighton future has moved back into the transfer spotlight after reported Tottenham interest gave Albion a clear valuation decision.

TEAMtalk report that Spurs have joined Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in showing interest in the Denmark international, with Brighton understood to value the midfielder at around £35 million.

That figure matters because O’Riley is not a fringe asset on a short deal. Transfermarkt lists his Brighton contract as running until June 2029, while the Premier League still profiles him as part of Albion’s senior midfield group.

ReadBrighton has already covered how Roma interest forced a fresh Matt O’Riley decision, and the new Tottenham link only sharpens the same issue.

Hurzeler Faces Midfield Depth Trade-Off

For Fabian Hurzeler, this is not a simple sell-or-keep call.

Brighton have already reshaped heavily around European football, defensive turnover and another busy recruitment market. Selling O’Riley would create funds, but it would also remove a left-footed midfielder capable of arriving between the lines and playing in higher-tempo possession phases.

The reported valuation gives Albion a sensible line. Tottenham, Atletico and Dortmund may all see a player whose Brighton role is not fully secure, but his contract gives the club control.

Brighton do not need to panic. A £35m fee would represent a serious conversation, especially with Celtic’s sell-on clause also relevant to any future deal. Anything below that should be much easier to resist.

O’Riley still has enough top-flight runway to rebuild value under Hurzeler. Unless a buyer reaches Brighton’s number, the stronger call may be giving him pre-season to earn a clearer role rather than cashing in during a crowded market.

Albion can use the interest without forcing the sale. That is the advantage of long-term control.
