Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed that Joel Veltman has left the club after his contract expired, ending a six-year spell at the Amex.
Brighton announced on Thursday that Veltman has moved on after joining from Ajax in 2020 and making 191 appearances for the club.
The Dutch defender also served as a Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation ambassador from 2022, giving his departure a community dimension as well as a football one.
Hurzeler Loses A Trusted Defensive Voice
Chairman Tony Bloom described Veltman as “terrific” for Brighton, and pointed to his role in the club’s upward trajectory, including the season Albion qualified for Europe for the first time.
Fabian Hurzeler is now losing another experienced defender during a sharp back-line reset.
Adam Webster has also moved on, while Brighton have added fresh defensive profiles including Michael Svoboda and Pascal Struijk. ReadBrighton has already looked at how Webster’s exit gave Hurzeler a defensive deadline, and Veltman’s departure adds another senior gap.
Veltman was rarely the headline act, which was part of his value. He covered right-back and centre-back, understood the Premier League rhythm and gave Albion a calm, streetwise edge when games needed managing.
Brighton are refreshing the back line and building around players with resale or development upside.
Replacing Veltman’s minutes is one job. Replacing his authority may take longer.
