- The German became Albion’s Premier League top scorer
- Gross evolved into Brighton’s ultimate tactical weapon
Few players have shaped the modern history of Brighton & Hove Albion quite like Pascal Gross.
Signed from Ingolstadt ahead of Brighton’s first-ever Premier League season in 2017, Gross quickly became one of the club’s most influential and intelligent players. Nearly a decade later, he remains one of the defining figures of Albion’s rise from newly-promoted outsiders to established European contenders.
Brighton’s smartest modern signing
Gross arrived in Sussex for around £3 million after impressing in Germany with FC Ingolstadt. Despite Ingolstadt’s relegation from the Bundesliga, Gross had created more chances than any player in the division during the 2016/17 season.
This was an early indicator of the creativity Brighton were signing. His impact was immediate.
In September 2017, Gross scored Brighton’s first-ever Premier League goal in a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion before adding a second later in the same match. He finished his debut season with seven goals and eight assists and played a major role in securing the club’s Premier League survival.
One of his most iconic moments came in May 2018 when his headed winner against Manchester United secured Brighton’s top-flight status at the Amex Stadium.

The tactical evolution of Pascal Gross
Across multiple managerial eras, from Chris Hughton to Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi and Fabian Hurzeler, Gross consistently remained indispensable.
His versatility became one of Brighton’s greatest tactical weapons. Whether operating as a number ten, central midfielder, winger, right-back, or even false nine, Gross adapted seamlessly while maintaining his creative influence.
The German international became synonymous with Brighton’s possession-based style thanks to his intelligence, technical security, and elite chance creation.
During Brighton’s historic 2022/23 campaign, Gross played one of the best seasons of his career. Albion secured European qualification for the first time in club history, while Gross produced goals, assists, and leadership throughout the season.
He also became Brighton’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer during the 2023/24 season, underlining his consistency and importance to the club across several years.
Why Brighton supporters still adore Gross
Gross departed for Borussia Dortmund in 2024, returning to Germany after seven hugely successful years on the south coast. Even during his short spell in the Bundesliga, his quality remained evident, including a remarkable four-assist performance against Union Berlin.
However, his connection with Brighton never disappeared.
After struggling for regular minutes in Dortmund, Gross returned to Brighton in January 2026, citing his desire to play regularly and push for a place in Germany’s World Cup squad.
His return was welcomed emotionally by supporters, many of whom still view him as one of the greatest players in the club’s modern history.
Beyond the statistics, Gross represented the intelligence and evolution of Brighton’s recruitment model. He was never the fastest or most physically dominant player, but his awareness, technique, and understanding of space consistently allowed him to control matches.
For Brighton supporters, Pascal Gross will always be remembered as far more than just a midfielder. He was the player who helped transform the club into a Premier League force.
