Brighton have reportedly rejected a club-record £25million offer from Coventry City for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The Seagulls are holding out for closer to £30million and want a potential buy-back clause included in any agreement.
According to a report from talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Coventry remain hopeful of bringing Rushworth back permanently despite seeing two offers rejected.
The 25-year-old spent last season on loan with the Sky Blues and played every Championship fixture. He recorded 17 clean sheets as Frank Lampard’s side secured promotion to the Premier League.
Rushworth was also selected in the Championship Team of the Season following his impressive campaign. However, he has yet to make a competitive senior appearance for Brighton.
Brighton hold firm on Carl Rushworth valuation
Coventry’s latest proposal would comfortably break their transfer record. Brighton’s refusal highlights how highly the club value a goalkeeper who joined their academy in 2019.
A potential buy-back clause could allow Albion to benefit from Rushworth’s development while receiving a significant fee this summer. However, Coventry must first move closer to Brighton’s £30million valuation.
Newcastle have also opened talks over a possible move for Rushworth. The Magpies’ interest could strengthen Brighton’s negotiating position and create further competition for his signature.
Rushworth is understood to favour regular first-team football after establishing himself under Lampard. Coventry can offer that opportunity following promotion, while Bart Verbruggen remains Brighton’s established first-choice goalkeeper.
Brighton now face a major decision. Accepting an improved bid would secure another substantial academy profit, but Rushworth’s performances suggest he could eventually challenge for the starting position at the Amex.
