- Carl Rushworth’s future at Coventry
- Goalkeeper starred in promotion-winning season
- Brighton decision depends on Bart Verbruggen’s future
Brighton face one of their most important summer decisions over Carl Rushworth, as newly promoted Coventry City prepare a permanent move for the goalkeeper after his standout Championship season.
Coventry Want Rushworth Permanently
The 24-year-old played a pivotal role in Coventry’s promotion, producing a series of high-level performances under Frank Lampard as the club returned to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years. His consistency has not gone unnoticed, and Coventry are now expected to table a bid to secure him on a full-time basis.
Rushworth’s situation is finely balanced. Despite being highly rated at Brighton, he is yet to make a senior appearance for the club. With first-team opportunities still uncertain, the appeal of regular Premier League football at Coventry is huge, particularly given his strong relationship with Lampard, who has been instrumental in his development this season.
Rushworth’s Standout Season in Numbers
Statistically, Rushworth has been one of the Championship’s standout performers. He recorded 17 clean sheets in 46 appearances, made 123 saves, and prevented 6.72 goals across the campaign. His ability with the ball at his feet has also been a major asset, registering one assist, creating six chances, and completing over 1,000 passes. That final metric is more than any other goalkeeper in the division.
Those numbers underline why Coventry are so keen to secure his services permanently, with the club viewing him as a cornerstone of their plans to establish themselves in the top flight.
Brighton’s Goalkeeping Dilemma
However, Brighton’s decision may ultimately hinge on the future of Bart Verbruggen. The Dutch international has attracted growing interest from across Europe, with reports linking him to Bayern Munich as a long-term successor to Manuel Neuer. While Verbruggen has publicly played down the speculation, any serious movement could force Brighton to reconsider their goalkeeping options.
If Verbruggen were to leave, Rushworth could suddenly become a key part of Fabian Hurzeler’s plans. But if the Dutchman stays, pathways to regular minutes at the Amex remain limited, potentially pushing Rushworth towards a permanent exit.

The goalkeeper himself has previously expressed a desire to remain at Coventry, and the promise of consistent Premier League football could also strengthen his chances of breaking into the England setup. He was reportedly close to a call-up during the March international break, and regular top-flight exposure would only enhance his prospects.
Rushworth has already completed loan spells at Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea City, Hull City and now Coventry, leaving him with little left to prove outside the Premier League. The next step is clear.
Brighton must now decide whether to integrate one of their most promising academy products or cash in on a player they value at around £20 million.
