Brighton & Hove Albion are set to retain Carlos Baleba after Manchester United decided against pursuing the midfielder this summer.
United have tracked the Cameroon international for several months but consider the cost of completing a transfer too high.
TEAMtalk reports that United will not move for Baleba or Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. Michael Carrick’s side are instead assessing cheaper options valued below £40million.
The decision removes one of Baleba’s most prominent suitors and gives Fabian Hürzeler greater certainty before Brighton begin their European campaign.

Brighton have maintained a strong negotiating position throughout the summer. Baleba remains under contract until 2028, with Albion holding an option for another year.
United had reportedly been considering a deal worth between £70million and £80million. However, their substantial midfield spending has reduced the likelihood of another expensive arrival.

Baleba has already reported for pre-season and remains an important part of Hürzeler’s midfield plans. His ball-winning ability and strength in possession will be valuable as Brighton balance the Premier League with Conference League football.
Another club could still make an approach before the window closes. For now, Brighton appear increasingly likely to keep the 22-year-old for another season.
