Brighton face an important decision over Tommy Watson’s next move after Derby County joined the growing race to sign the winger on loan.
Derby are reportedly among several Championship clubs interested in the 20-year-old this summer.
West Ham, West Bromwich Albion, Hull City and Preston North End have also been credited with interest. The focus around Watson is now on finding a club prepared to give him regular first-team football.
The forward and his representatives are understood to view the decision as a major step in his development.
Watson needs an environment where he can build rhythm, confidence and consistency across a full season.
Brighton must choose Watson loan carefully
Brighton signed Watson from Sunderland last summer after he scored the winning goal in the Championship play-off final.
However, his first season on the south coast brought limited Premier League opportunities. He made six substitute appearances before joining Millwall on loan for the second half of the campaign.
ReadBrighton previously reported that another temporary move was expected after Watson’s difficult first year.
Derby could offer the winger another route into regular Championship football. However, Brighton must judge each club on playing time, tactical fit and the role being offered.
Watson remains under contract until 2029 and is still viewed as a long-term Brighton player. The priority is therefore development rather than a permanent exit.
Competition for his signature should give Albion several options. The most important call will be choosing the club capable of giving Watson sustained minutes rather than another season on the fringes.
