Connor Goldson’s latest battle brings powerful Brighton reminder

Connor Goldson’s Brighton story has always carried more weight than appearances, promotions or defensive partnerships.

Nine years after undergoing life-saving surgery while an Albion player, Goldson is preparing for a second open-heart procedure.

The former Brighton defender announced that doctors had identified an enlarged aorta during routine medical checks. He is now due to undergo surgery only days after preparing to begin another pre-season.

Goldson spoke openly about the anger and fear caused by the news. He also revealed that his children had seen him cry for the first time.

For Brighton supporters, the announcement brings back memories of the health issue which changed his life and career in 2017.

Goldson’s Brighton career changed overnight

Goldson joined Brighton from Shrewsbury Town in 2015 and became part of the squad which secured promotion to the Premier League.

He competed alongside Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy before medical tests detected an aortic aneurysm when he was 24.

The condition left part of his aorta at risk of rupturing, with potentially fatal consequences. Goldson later told the British Heart Foundation that surgery was necessary if he wanted to continue playing football.

“Basically, if I wanted to play football, I had to have it done,” he said. “There were no ifs or buts.”

Goldson underwent surgery in March 2017 before returning to training only four months later.

The speed of his recovery was remarkable. However, the physical and emotional cost of the experience remained largely hidden from supporters at the time.

Former Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale summed up the mood surrounding Goldson when he said he would quit football if it meant his team-mate remained alive.

The terrace chant “Always believe in Connor Goldson” also took on a deeper meaning. It became associated with more than his performances during Brighton’s promotion campaign.

Routine screening has protected Goldson again

Goldson’s latest announcement once more highlights the importance of regular medical checks.

He had felt ready to return for pre-season before doctors identified the new problem. Without that screening, an enlarged aorta could have remained undetected.

Professional footballers have access to detailed medical support which many people do not receive. Goldson was a fit young athlete when his original condition was discovered.

He had not collapsed during a match or suffered an obvious warning. A routine examination found the danger before it became an emergency.

The same process has now given him another opportunity to receive treatment before the problem causes catastrophic damage.

Goldson has expressed gratitude towards the medical staff involved, despite his understandable frustration. He also wants to share more of his second recovery to help people facing similar procedures.

His previous British Heart Foundation interview showed how difficult he once found discussing his condition. The scar from his first operation now runs through a tattoo across his chest carrying the words “Chase your Dreams”.

This time, Goldson appears determined to use his experience to increase awareness and make other patients feel less isolated.

Football can wait for Goldson

Goldson still hopes his playing career can continue after surgery.

Such determination should surprise nobody who followed his return at Brighton. He later joined Rangers and became a major figure during a successful period at Ibrox.

Goldson and former Albion defender Leon Balogun both played important roles in Rangers’ 2020/21 title-winning campaign, as ReadBrighton previously noted.

Goldson also competed in the Champions League and helped Rangers reach the Europa League final.

Those achievements made his first recovery even more impressive. However, extending his career cannot be the immediate priority.

Goldson is now a husband and father. He admitted that his family were central to his thoughts after learning he needed another operation.

A return to the pitch would provide another extraordinary chapter. Recovering safely and returning home to his family carries far greater importance.

Goldson remains part of Brighton

Goldson made fewer than 50 appearances for Brighton, but his connection with the club cannot be measured through statistics.

He belonged to a group which delivered promotion and helped change Albion’s future. Supporters also watched him confront a life-threatening diagnosis before rebuilding his career.

His latest announcement will bring back many of those emotions.

Goldson does not need exaggerated descriptions of bravery or heroism. Speaking publicly about his fear, anger and gratitude already shows considerable strength.

Nine years after Brighton supporters first stood behind him, the same message remains appropriate.

Always believe in Connor Goldson.
