Brighton Transfer Window 2026 Talking Points & Facts – 11th July

Brighton’s summer has a single, unresolved question running through it: who plays on the left when the Premier League season starts, and how much will the answer cost? Kaoru Mitoma’s situation remains suspended between injury and uncertainty, and on Saturday the club’s search for an answer accelerated, with Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas now squarely in the crosshairs — and West Ham suddenly in the way.

It has been a day defined by that single storyline rather than a rush of unconnected news, but the pace within it has been rapid. In the space of 19 hours, Albion moved from “weighing up” Vargas to preparing a reported £15m bid, then watched West Ham join the chase before readying a formal offer of their own. Add in Maxim De Cuyper’s World Cup elimination with Belgium and the club’s confirmed France training camp later this month, and Saturday leaves Brighton fans with a question worth asking directly: with Jan Paul van Hecke already sold for £52m and roughly £50m committed to Luka Vuskovic, how much room is left in the budget for a World Cup quarter-finalist valued at just £15m?

Who Are Brighton Chasing To Replace Mitoma?

Ruben Vargas is the name dominating ReadBrighton’s live transfer blog today. The 27-year-old Switzerland international has scored twice and set up another in five World Cup appearances, and Sevilla are said to value him at around £15m — a fee that could rise sharply depending on Sunday’s quarter-final against Argentina. Brighton were first linked on Friday, per the Sussex Express, and by Saturday evening Marca and Mundo Deportivo were reporting the club were readying a formal offer.

What Happened With Kaoru Mitoma?

The Vargas interest only makes sense in the context of Mitoma’s situation. The winger is already managing a hamstring injury that cost him Japan’s World Cup, and this week he was involved in a car accident in Tokyo, with police investigating and the club issuing a statement of support. He is a doubt for both the Conference League play-off first leg on 20 August and the Premier League opener three days later, and his own transfer situation is on hold in the meantime.

Who Else Is Competing For Vargas?

West Ham made the opening move by contacting Sevilla directly, but Brighton have since matched that interest with concrete steps of their own. Aston Villa, Tottenham and Leeds have also been credited with interest by the Sussex Express, though West Ham’s Championship status after relegation is viewed as a significant hurdle in persuading a player fresh from a World Cup quarter-final.

How Did Belgium’s Exit Affect Brighton’s De Cuyper Plans?

Away from the Vargas chase, Maxim De Cuyper’s World Cup ended in Belgium’s 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Spain, but the full-back’s evening tracking Lamine Yamal gave Fabian Hurzeler a useful pre-season reference point regardless of the result. De Cuyper is now expected to report back for the club’s France training camp along with the rest of Hurzeler’s World Cup contingent.

What Other Transfer Business Is Still Moving?

Two deals from earlier in the window remain unfinished. Luka Vuskovic’s reported £46m-plus-£4m move from Tottenham — which would make him Brighton’s record signing — is still awaiting a medical, expected once Croatia’s World Cup run concludes. Diego Coppola’s proposed permanent exit to Paris FC, for a reported €18m plus €2m in add-ons, was described by Fabrizio Romano as a deal in principle as of Thursday, but has not yet been confirmed by either club.

When Do Brighton Report Back For Pre-season?

Hurzeler’s squad — including the World Cup contingent once their tournaments end — will assemble for a training camp in France later this month, with matches against two French sides on the schedule. That gives incoming players like Vuskovic a tight but workable window to finalise their moves before the Conference League play-off on 20 August and the visit of Aston Villa to the Amex on 23 August.
