Brighton & Hove Albion are continuing to monitor Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Archie Gray, but the early message from north London is clear.
TransferFeed reports that Brighton, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Bournemouth are among the clubs watching the 20-year-old’s situation.
The same update says Tottenham have made it clear Gray is not for sale, with Spurs viewing him as part of their long-term plans.
That stance fits with TEAMtalk’s reporting, which says Tottenham have no intention of allowing Gray to leave despite their aggressive midfield rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi.
For Fabian Hurzeler, the appeal is obvious. Gray can play in central midfield, defensive midfield or at right-back, giving Brighton the kind of flexible profile they usually track closely.
But this is not the same kind of opportunity as Luka Vuskovic. Read Brighton has already looked at why Vuskovic gives Albion a longer-term defensive pathway. Gray, for now, looks like a protected Tottenham asset rather than a player being moved towards the market.
Tottenham’s position has also hardened after Newcastle saw an approach rejected, with Football365 citing Fabrizio Romano’s report that Spurs turned down a bid for the midfielder.
Brighton’s most realistic route is patience. If Tottenham’s incoming midfield business squeezes Gray’s minutes later in the window, Albion should be ready.
Until then, this is one to watch, not one to oversell.
