Michael Svoboda Joins Brighton From Venezia On Four-Year Contract

Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed the signing of Austria defender Michael Svoboda from Serie B champions Venezia on a four-year contract.

The 27-year-old centre-back is currently on international duty with Austria at the 2026 World Cup and will link up with Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton squad later in the summer.

Svoboda arrives after captaining Venezia to the Serie B title, giving Albion another senior defensive option before a season that includes Premier League and European demands.

Hurzeler said Svoboda had enjoyed a “fantastic season” in Italy and praised the defender’s attributes in and out of possession. The Brighton head coach also said several clubs had pursued the Austrian this summer, making the deal an important early defensive win.

Read Brighton had already covered how Svoboda’s move from Venezia gives Hurzeler an experienced centre-back boost, and the official confirmation now turns that plan into a completed squad addition.

Svoboda Adds Senior Competition To Brighton Defence

Svoboda gives Brighton a different profile from the teenage-upside route around Luka Vuskovic. He is 27, physically mature and arrives after a title-winning season in Italy.

GOAL reported that Brighton had moved to trigger a release clause for the Venezia captain after he helped lead the club back to Serie A.

That context matters. Brighton have already reshaped their back line this summer, and Hurzeler needs defenders who can compete quickly rather than only develop slowly.

Svoboda came through the youth ranks with Schwechat before joining WSG Tirol, where he won promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga. He then moved to Venezia in 2020 and won promotion from Serie B in both 2021 and 2026.

Last season, he became central to Venezia’s title run. After starting his first league game of the campaign in matchweek 10, the Italian side lost only two more matches, with Svoboda starting all but one of those games.

He made his Austria debut in October 2024 and now has four caps. Brighton will hope that combination of leadership, size and promotion experience gives Hurzeler a reliable defensive option once pre-season sharpens.
