Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed Jeremy Sarmiento has completed a permanent move to Middlesbrough, closing a stop-start five-year spell that never quite became the first-team breakthrough once imagined.
The club announced the deal on Thursday, with the winger leaving for undisclosed terms after spending the second half of last season on loan at the Riverside. Albion said the criteria in that loan agreement had been met, automatically turning the move into a permanent transfer.
Brighton Close Sarmiento Loan Cycle
Sarmiento joined Albion in 2021 and made 21 senior appearances, but his route became increasingly loan-heavy. Spells at West Bromwich Albion, Ipswich Town, Burnley, Cremonese and Middlesbrough kept him active, yet also underlined how crowded Brighton’s wide and attacking-midfield pathway has become.
Technical director Mike Cave framed the exit as a chance for the 24-year-old to settle after several temporary moves. That is the key football point. Brighton have regularly moved high-upside prospects through loans, but Sarmiento’s permanent departure shows the club are prepared to draw a hard line once pathway clarity fades.
For Fabian Hurzeler, this trims one more fringe attacking question before pre-season. Albion are already reshaping the squad through targeted recruitment, with recent transfer work around defensive depth also covered in ReadBrighton’s latest Brighton transfer news.
Sarmiento leaves as an Ecuador international, a former Brighton under-21 success story and a player still young enough to rebuild momentum at Championship level.
