At a glance

  • Brighton denied crucial penalty at 2–1 turning point
  • Gross voices frustration over VAR decision
  • Encouraging Albion display despite 3–1 defeat

There was a strong sense of what might have been for Brighton & Hove Albion as they slipped to a 3–1 defeat against Newcastle United, with a controversial penalty decision shaping the outcome at a key moment.

The Seagulls produced enough attacking threat to change the direction of the contest, especially during a lively second-half spell, but ultimately left St James’ Park without reward as Newcastle ended their five-match losing run.

Goals from Will Osula and Dan Burn handed the hosts early control before substitute Harvey Barnes struck in the 95th minute to seal the win, shortly after Jack Hinshelwood had pulled one back to make it 2–1.

Yet the defining moment arrived with Albion pushing for an equaliser.

Penalty Frustration Leaves Albion Asking Questions

At 2–1, Gross saw his goal-bound effort strike the arm of Malick Thiaw inside the penalty area. Brighton’s appeals were immediate, but referee Chris Kavanagh waved play on.

A VAR review followed, though officials at Stockley Park upheld the on-field decision, ruling that the defender’s arm was in a natural position.

For Gross, it was a call that remains difficult to accept.

“We had some big chances to make it 2-2,” he told The Argus.

“I also think it’s a penalty, in my opinion, because when I shot the ball he blocked it with his arm and, if he had not, it would have gone in. I don’t understand why we didn’t get a penalty.”

The decision left Albion chasing the game when the momentum appeared to be shifting in their favour.

Chances Missed And Moments That Mattered

Brighton’s intent after the break was clear, and they carved out openings that could have brought them level. A close-range miss from Yankuba Minteh proved costly, while Nick Pope produced a sharp stop to deny Charalampos Kostoulas.

On another day, those moments might have delivered a different result.

Instead, Newcastle held firm before adding a late third through Barnes, putting a gloss on a scoreline that did not fully reflect Albion’s attacking threat.

Howe Admits Fortune Played A Part

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted his side had ridden their luck at times, even as he praised their response.

“From an emotional level, that was a massive win for us,” Howe said during his post-match press conference.

“We knew it, everyone knew it internally.

“I think we’ve been building towards that for a few weeks and the training has been really strong, it’s been really committed, it’s been very competitive. And I’m a big believer that you always end up getting your rewards for that if your work continues to be strong and credit to the players for sticking together, staying united.

“Behind the scenes, they’ve been excellent and at times we’ve rode a little bit of luck today, but I think we’ve more than deserved that in the recent weeks.”

Encouragement Despite Defeat

While the 3–1 result will frustrate, there were clear positives in Brighton’s performance. The attacking movement caused problems, the response after going behind showed resilience, and the penalty incident only sharpened the sense that Albion were on the wrong side of fine margins.

For supporters, this felt less like a step backwards and more like a performance that deserved more than it received.
