Ivory Coast Claim AFCON Qualifier Victory as Yalcouye Shines
The Malick Yalcouye Ivory Coast debut could not have gone much better.
Brighton’s teenage midfielder scored his first international goal and won the penalty that Franck Kessie converted, as Hervé Renard’s side beat Ghana 2-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
It was a huge night for a player Brighton supporters have followed closely for months.
Renard is back for a second spell in charge of the Elephants.
He picked Yalcouye in a No.10 role and let him play the full 90 minutes, showing real faith in a teenager who only earned his first senior call-up earlier this month. The gamble paid off within a single match.
“I don’t think anyone will argue with his performances in the last few weeks. Congratulations to him,” Renard said afterwards.
The win moves Ivory Coast closer to qualification. Their next assignment is a trip to Abidjan to face Somalia.
Ivory Coast Control Early Exchanges with Yalcouye Threat
Ivory Coast set the tone from the first whistle. They pressed high and forced Ghana into uncomfortable positions deep in their own half. Yalcouye was central to that plan. He drifted between the lines, looking for pockets of space behind Ghana’s midfield line.
Renard has followed the midfielder’s development closely at club level, and he explained why the No.10 role suited him so well on the night.
“He has been playing higher up the pitch,” the coach said.
“I’ve seen a lot of games as well where he has been just ahead of the defence.”
That flexibility gave Renard extra options once the game began. Yalcouye could drop deeper to collect the ball, or push higher to support the front line, switching roles as the match demanded.
“When you can be that versatile, it’s a big strength,” Renard added.
Brighton fans who read about the midfielder’s potential earlier this year will recognise that description.
Ghana struggled to work out which player should track him, and Ivory Coast built the platform that would produce two goals after the break.
Yalcouye Goal and Kessie Penalty Seal Victory in Second Half
The breakthrough that Ivory Coast’s control deserved arrived through Yalcouye himself.
He turned the ball home to become a debut goalscorer for his country, sending the travelling support into raptures.
That goal completed a memorable Malick Yalcouye Ivory Coast debut, exactly the kind of impact Renard had hoped for when he first named him in the squad.
Ghana searched for a way back into the game, but Yalcouye was not finished contributing. He won the penalty that gave Ivory Coast breathing space soon after, and Kessie stepped up to convert it and settle the contest at 2-0.
Ghana never looked like finding a route back after that second goal went in.
Renard could not hide his satisfaction with how quickly the teenager has adapted since leaving Ivorian football behind.
“He didn’t leave the Ivorian league very long ago,” he said, as reported in The Argus report.
“His progress has been brilliant and impressive because it is not easy to make an impact in the Premier League.”
The coach was equally clear about where he wants that progress to continue.
“Now we hope he puts all his talent into the national team,” Renard said.
