Arsenal secured a 1-0 Women’s Super League opening victory at Broadfield Stadium, but head coach Renee Slegers acknowledged significant tactical areas for improvement.
Lisa Baum scored a 10th-minute winning goal to settle the match in Sussex.
The 19-year-old winger was one of four summer signings handed a starting role. Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle and Misa Rodriguez also made their competitive debuts against Brighton.
Assessing Spells Without Possession
The visitors struggled to control the match tempo after taking an early lead.
Brighton restricted open-play chances, forcing the away side into extended periods without the ball.
Slegers highlighted a need for better decision-making when space opens up on the pitch.
“Tactically, we are going to look at what we do when we have longer spells of possession, how we create and dictate tempo and working on minimising the opponent’s time on the ball, but the main positive today was that we got the win,” Slegers confirmed.
Creating Competition Across Positions
Rodriguez justified her selection ahead of Anneke Borbe with a crucial early stop.
The goalkeeper preserved the clean sheet while Stanway added physical presence to the midfield structure following her summer transfer.
“We become more unpredictable for the opposition and Georgia has the quality of playing bigger and looks bigger so that brings a different dynamic to our midfield,” added Slegers.
Arsenal return to league action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.
