‘Gave me confidence’ – Struijk reveals Hürzeler plan at Brighton

Pascal Struijk has revealed how Fabian Hürzeler used video clips to show exactly where he would fit at Brighton before convincing the defender to leave Leeds United.

Struijk joined Albion earlier this summer on a five-year contract, adding Premier League experience and a natural left-footed option to Hürzeler’s rebuilt defence.

The 26-year-old had several conversations with the Brighton head coach before completing his move, but they went beyond a standard transfer pitch.

Struijk told The Argus that Hürzeler repeatedly showed him clips of his game and explained how those qualities could work within Brighton’s system. Read Struijk’s interview with The Argus

“He gave me a lot of confidence to join the club,” Struijk said.

Hürzeler gives Struijk clear Brighton role

Brighton identified Struijk as a player capable of making an immediate impact following major changes at centre-back this summer.

Hürzeler praised his defensive work, comfort in possession and leadership after the signing was confirmed, describing him as exactly the profile Albion wanted.

Struijk’s comments also build on what he has already said about Brighton’s project.

ReadBrighton covered why Struijk believed the move made sense, with European football, player development and Albion’s style all influencing his decision.

Now the tactical plan is becoming clearer too.

Hürzeler did not simply tell Struijk he wanted him. He showed him why.

For a defender expected to play a major role in Brighton’s new-look back line, that appears to have made a significant impression.
