Fabrizio Romano confirms why Brighton sanctioned Welbeck departure

Danny Welbeck’s transfer to Chelsea is set to proceed after Brighton accepted the striker’s formal request to leave.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Albion have approved his departure, with the move now expected to be completed.

Chelsea have already agreed personal terms with the 35-year-old. Welbeck is due to undergo a medical before signing a two-year contract with the London club.

Danny Welbeck transfer request changes Brighton position

Brighton were initially willing to sell Welbeck if Chelsea met their valuation and the player wanted the move. His formal request has now provided the club with a clear decision.

ReadBrighton reported on Tuesday that the clubs were close to an agreement. All parties expected the transfer to progress following a breakthrough in negotiations.

Welbeck had continued training normally during Brighton’s pre-season camp. However, he made it clear that he wanted to accept Chelsea’s offer when the opportunity became available.

The forward signed a one-year extension in March, keeping him under contract until June 2027. Brighton therefore retained control of the situation and were not required to sanction his departure.

Welbeck scored 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances last season. It was the strongest league return of his career and made him Brighton’s leading scorer.

His departure will leave Fabian Hürzeler with an important attacking decision. Charalampos Kostoulas could receive greater responsibility, while Stefanos Tzimas continues his recovery from injury.

Brighton may also enter the market for another experienced forward before the window closes. Welbeck’s expected move will end a six-year stay in which he made more than 200 appearances for Albion.
