Danny Welbeck exit leaves Brighton with more than goals to replace

Danny Welbeck’s exit leaves Brighton facing one of their most important attacking decisions of the summer.

Brighton have approved Welbeck’s request to join Chelsea, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that an agreement is in place and a medical will follow. ReadBrighton reported on Tuesday that the clubs had made a breakthrough in negotiations.

Replacing Welbeck will require more than finding another player capable of scoring 13 league goals. Fabian Hürzeler must also replace a dependable focal point who helped organise Brighton’s press and provided experience around several young attackers.

Why the Danny Welbeck exit is a major loss

Welbeck finished last season as Brighton’s leading Premier League scorer, recording 13 goals in 37 appearances. It was the best league return of his career and continued his improvement rather than a gradual decline. The Premier League’s official statistics underline his sustained contribution.

His importance extended beyond finishing. Welbeck could receive direct passes, occupy centre-backs and create space for runners arriving from deeper positions.

Brighton also trusted him to lead their pressure from the front. His experience allowed him to recognise when to close down a defender and when to hold his position, helping the players behind him maintain their structure.

Those qualities will be difficult to transfer immediately to a younger striker. Welbeck made more than 200 Brighton appearances after arriving in 2020 and developed into one of the senior figures inside a youthful squad.

The timing also increases the significance of his departure. Kaoru Mitoma is not expected to recover for the beginning of the season, while Stefanos Tzimas is still building fitness after a serious knee injury.

Brighton are therefore losing their leading scorer while two other attacking options remain unavailable or short of match sharpness. Hürzeler cannot expect one player to assume every responsibility from the opening weekend.

Kostoulas deserves the first opportunity

Charalampos Kostoulas is the clearest candidate to receive more minutes.

The 19-year-old scored twice against Wycombe Wanderers during pre-season and has already displayed the physical qualities needed to trouble Premier League defenders. He presses with energy, attacks the space behind the back line and offers a more direct route through the middle.

Kostoulas can also drop away from the centre-backs and combine with Brighton’s attacking midfielders. That flexibility could help Hürzeler adjust the role rather than attempt to recreate Welbeck’s game exactly.

However, Kostoulas should not immediately carry the scoring burden of a player who delivered consistently across an entire Premier League campaign. His senior experience remains limited, and his development will include uneven performances.

Brighton should give him a genuine pathway without making him responsible for replacing their leading scorer alone.

Tzimas could eventually provide more natural competition at centre-forward. The Greece youth international has returned to outdoor work following his knee injury, but his recovery must be managed carefully. He is unlikely to begin the campaign ready to start several matches in quick succession.

Brighton still need another senior forward

Hürzeler can distribute some of Welbeck’s responsibilities across the attack.

Georginio Rutter can operate centrally and provide the combinations Welbeck offered between midfield and attack. Yankuba Minteh and Tommy Watson will also need to contribute more goals from wide positions.

That approach can help Brighton evolve, but it does not remove the need for another established striker. The club will compete domestically and in Europe, leaving little room to rely on two young forwards whose availability and consistency remain uncertain.

ReadBrighton has already argued that Brighton should explore Liam Delap’s availability. The Chelsea striker would provide Premier League experience and could compete immediately with Kostoulas.

Whether Delap is attainable remains unclear, but the proposed idea reflects the type of addition Brighton require. Hürzeler needs a striker capable of starting immediately without restricting the development of Kostoulas and Tzimas.

Welbeck is a significant loss because Brighton are losing goals, reliability and leadership at the same time.

Kostoulas should receive the first opportunity to step forward. Tzimas can become an important option once fully fit. Brighton should still add another senior striker rather than ask either young player to replace Welbeck alone.
