Diego Coppola Return Gives Brighton Clear Defensive Call

Diego Coppola’s summer return gives Brighton another immediate centre-back call before Fabian Hurzeler’s squad steps into a European season.

Brighton confirmed in January that Coppola had joined Paris FC on loan until the end of the season, with Hurzeler stressing that regular minutes in France would support his development before Albion welcomed him back in the summer.

Hurzeler Faces Another Defensive Sorting Job

The timing matters. Brighton’s defensive department is already moving quickly around Jan Paul van Hecke’s Tottenham link and the club’s pursuit of Luka Vuskovic. Sky Sports reported that Albion made a £30m move for Vuskovic, while Tottenham have continued to pursue Van Hecke.

Coppola should not be treated as a background name in that conversation. He arrived from Hellas Verona as a long-term project, made nine Brighton appearances before the loan, and now returns with another half-season of senior football behind him.

That gives Hurzeler three clear options: integrate Coppola into pre-season, sanction another loan if minutes look limited, or use his return as cover while the club decide how far to push the Vuskovic chase.

For Brighton, this is the real value of the loan pathway. Coppola comes back as a more useful squad-planning piece, not simply as a returning loanee waiting for a decision.
