  • Albion fans dream of another World Cup-winning hero

There was a time when the idea of a Brighton player lifting the World Cup felt almost impossible. Back when Albion were fighting for survival at the foot of the Football League and searching for a place to call home, dreams rarely stretched as far as football’s grandest stage.

Yet in December 2022, under the dazzling lights of Lusail Stadium, Alexis Mac Allister turned that impossible dream into reality.

The Argentine midfielder became the first Albion player ever to win the FIFA World Cup and he did not simply make up the numbers. On the biggest night in football, he delivered a performance worthy of the occasion.

For Brighton supporters watching around the world, there was a strange sense of pride woven into every touch. Here was a player polished on the south coast sharing the stage with giants.

Alongside Lionel Messi and amid the chaos created by Kylian Mbappe, Mac Allister looked entirely at home in a final that finished 3-3 after extra-time before Argentina triumphed 4-2 on penalties.

Brighton’s man shines in the greatest World Cup final

The final itself has already passed into football folklore. It was drama, tension and brilliance wrapped into one unforgettable night.

And right in the middle of it stood Brighton’s man.

Mac Allister produced one of the defining moments of the match in the first-half. Bursting forward during a flowing Argentina counter-attack, he showed composure beyond his years to slide a perfectly weighted pass into Angel Di Maria, who swept home to make it 2-0.

An Albion player assisting a goal in a World Cup final once felt beyond imagination.

For supporters who remember Brighton’s darkest days, it was almost surreal to witness one of their own dominating football’s grandest occasion.

Television commentator Guy Mowbray summed it up perfectly when he described Di Maria’s strike as “a goal made by the boy from Brighton”.

How Alexis Mac Allister became Brighton’s first World Cup winner

At 2-0, Argentina appeared to be cruising towards glory. Messi was controlling the game while Mac Allister glided effortlessly through midfield with the calm intelligence Brighton fans had grown to love at the Amex.

Then came the chaos.

Mbappe struck twice in barely a minute to drag France level and send the final into extra-time. Messi thought he had won it once more before Mbappe completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Somewhere amid the madness, Mac Allister departed to a standing ovation after one of the finest performances of his career.

Eventually penalties settled the contest. Argentina held their nerve to seal a 4-2 shootout victory as Emiliano Martinez delivered his now famous spot-kick heroics.

When Gonzalo Montiel converted the decisive penalty, the celebrations exploded around Lusail Stadium.

Messi dropped to his knees. Argentina rejoiced. And Brighton had its own slice of football history.

Albion’s World Cup dream could happen again

For Brighton supporters, Mac Allister’s triumph represented far more than one player’s success. It symbolised the remarkable rise of the football club itself.

From the uncertainty of the Withdean years to producing a World Cup winner, Albion had climbed further than many supporters ever believed possible.

Now, with another World Cup approaching this summer, there is fresh excitement on the south coast. Brighton’s influence on the global stage continues to grow and fans will once again dream of seeing another Albion star lift football’s greatest prize.

Although if England finally bring football home instead, few Brighton fans would complain too loudly…
