Kaoru Mitoma leaving the pitch against Wolves immediately changed the mood inside the Amex Stadium.

Brighton were cruising towards victory, but the sight of their most unpredictable attacker pulling up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury brought instant concern. Fabian Hurzeler confirmed in his press conference yesterday that Mitoma will miss the remainder of the season.

Mitoma injury confirmed by Hurzeler

He said: “He [Mitoma] will be out. He will miss the next two games.”

It is a huge blow for both Brighton and Japan ahead of the summer. Hurzeler added that there is uncertainly around Mitoma’s recovery time ahead of the World Cup with Japan.

Mitoma had finally started to rediscover his rhythm after another frustrating injury-hit campaign. His stunning volley against Tottenham Hotspur recently earned the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award for April, while his overall performances in recent weeks had started to resemble the explosive winger Brighton rely on so heavily.

Even when he is not scoring or assisting, Mitoma changes matches simply through his movement, dribbling and ability to destabilise defensive structures. And that is the problem Brighton now face.

Who replaces Mitoma for Brighton

They have options to replace him structurally, but nobody can truly replicate what he offers individually. Hurzeler does at least have tactical flexibility.

Yankuba Minteh shifted onto the left wing after Mitoma’s withdrawal against Wolves and immediately caused problems, eventually scoring Brighton’s third goal. Given his directness and pace, he looks the most natural short-term solution.

That could allow Diego Gomez to continue on the right, as he may also return into contention after recovering from injury.

There are other possibilities too. Ferdi Kadıoglu’s versatility gives Brighton another option if Hurzeler wants greater balance defensively, while Maxim De Cuyper has occasionally operated further forward on the left flank before.

The issue is not finding someone to stand in Mitoma’s position. The issue is replacing Mitoma himself.

A major loss in Europe race

Brighton’s system is built around fluidity and adaptability, but Mitoma remains uniquely difficult to recreate because so much of his game depends on instinct. Few players in the squad can manipulate space in isolation as effectively or draw defenders out of shape so consistently.

That is why his absence would feel so significant during the final weeks of the European race. Brighton still have enough attacking depth to remain dangerous. They still have enough tactical flexibility to adjust.

But none of those players are Mitoma. And that is the reality Hurzeler must now navigate heading into the final two matches of the season.
