- Diego Coppola impressing on loan at Paris FC
- Brighton & Hove Albion may reshape defence this summer
- Loan spell could boost Coppola’s first-team chances
When Brighton & Hove Albion signed Diego Coppola from Hellas Verona in the summer of 2025, it looked like another classic long-term Brighton investment. Tony Bloom had brought in a young, highly rated defender early before his value soared.
A year on, Coppola has barely featured on the south coast. The 22-year-old centre-back has struggled for senior minutes under Fabian Hurzeler, largely because of the competition in Brighton’s back line. With Jan Paul van Hecke and Lewis Dunk ahead of him, plus the club’s depth across defence, regular football was never guaranteed. That made a January loan move to Paris FC a logical next step.
Coppola’s Loan Is Paying Off
It now looks like a very smart one. Coppola has quietly become a regular in France, starting all 12 of his Ligue 1 appearances for Paris and helping the promoted side tighten up defensively during the second half of the campaign. He has also contributed two assists, showing the composure on the ball that first attracted Brighton to him.
His numbers suggest a defender growing in confidence. Across those 12 matches, Coppola has made 103 clearances, won 140 duels and averaged nearly 11 defensive contributions per 90 minutes, placing him among the stronger defensive performers in the division. Standing at 1.93m, he offers an aerial presence, but his game is not built purely on physicality. He reads danger well, stays calm in possession and is comfortable stepping into build-up play.
Why Brighton May Need Coppola Soon
That profile was already clear during his time in Italy. Coppola emerged through Verona’s academy, made more than 80 Serie A appearances and even earned his senior Italy debut in June 2025 against Norway national football team. Brighton moved quickly to secure him on a five-year deal, but his first season has been more about patience than impact.
The bigger picture may change this summer. Van Hecke continues to attract interest, while Dunk is in the latter stages of his career. Brighton are expected to reshape parts of their defence, and that could create an opening Coppola did not have 12 months ago. The loan to Paris FC may prove to be exactly what he needed: consistent top-level football away from the pressure of the Premier League spotlight.

Could Coppola Break Through Next Season?
Brighton’s recruitment model has often relied on buying young players before they break through. Coppola still fits that pattern. His first season at the Amex may have passed quietly, but his progress in France suggests he remains very much part of the club’s future.
If Brighton lose key defenders this summer, Coppola may return not as a prospect waiting in the background but as a genuine first-team option.
