At a glance

  • Matt O’Riley arrived at Brighton with big expectations
  • His long-term role at Albion could become one to watch
  • A familiar transfer thread has resurfaced before the summer window

Matt O’Riley’s Brighton situation could become one of the more intriguing subplots of the summer as the midfielder’s second season at the Amex continues to invite questions.

Brighton brought O’Riley back from Marseille in February after his loan spell in France was cut short. The Denmark international had played regularly under Roberto De Zerbi, making 25 appearances in Ligue 1.

He also gained Champions League minutes during his time in continental Europe. However, the loan spell was cut short as Brighton called him back for the second half of the season.

Since his return, the midfielder has only made two starts and played six matches in the Premier League. That has left his long-term place in the squad in doubt, especially now that outside interest is resurfacing.

Atletico Madrid Considering Matt O’Riley Transfer

According to Sky Sports, Atletico Madrid are considering a summer transfer for Brighton midfielder Matt O’Riley.

The Spanish giants have a history of being linked with the midfielder. Atletico had already made a bid of around £20m in January 2024 when O’Riley was still playing for Celtic.

However, he eventually moved to Brighton, agreeing on a five-year contract until June 2029. The Seagulls had offered an additional £5m over their Spanish counterpart.

Nevertheless, Celtic did include a sell-on clause in the deal. The Scottish giants will bag 10% of future sales, hence Albion will make careful considerations before selling the Denmark international.

O’Riley’s Brighton Spell Has Been Hard To Judge

O’Riley arrived on the south coast with a strong reputation after producing 27 goals and 35 assists in 124 appearances for Celtic.

That output made him one of the most productive midfielders in Scotland before Albion eventually made a move for the midfielder.

However, his Brighton spell has been difficult to judge. The midfielder suffered an ankle injury just minutes into his debut against Crawley Town.

This immediately disrupted his first months at the Amex. Later, he produced a memorable moment against Man City by scoring a winner at the Amex in November 2024.

Regardless, O’Riley has lacked a clean and uninterrupted run that usually allows a player to properly establish himself at a club.

Brighton Midfield Picture Makes Summer Decision Complicated

O’Riley’s rhythm has been a key concern making it difficult for the club to find a clear role for the midfielder.

Fabian Hurzeler has several options in the centre, including Carlos Baleba, Mats Wieffer, Yasin Ayari, Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez.

All these midfielders have had more league involvement than O’Riley this season. Likewise, the midfield picture at the Amex is competitive.

Regardless, Brighton paid a major fee for O’Riley, and with a contract running until 2029 means that the Seagulls will have control over a sale.

If Hurzeler believes there is a role for the London native then the club might not sell the midfielder. However, if the German gaffer thinks the pathway is blocked, then a big-money move is expected this summer.
