Brighton received a mixed injury update ahead of the final stretch of the season, with encouraging news on Diego Gomez but fresh concern over Mats Wieffer. As the campaign approaches its decisive weeks, the Seagulls are balancing optimism with caution, knowing that squad fitness could play a key role in their push for a strong finish.
Positive Update on Diego Gomez
Midfielder Gomez has been sidelined since sustaining a knee injury in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham, missing recent fixtures against Chelsea and Newcastle. However, there is growing optimism that the Paraguay international will return before the campaign concludes.
Speaking ahead of the Newcastle match, Fabian Hurzeler confirmed: “Yes, he is right. The agent is right. Not always the agents are right, but in this case, he is definitely right.”
Gomez has been an important figure for Brighton this season, operating across multiple midfield roles and contributing five goals in 30 Premier League appearances. His versatility and energy have made him a key part of Hurzeler’s system.
The Brighton boss also provided a more personal insight into the situation, adding: “I’m very happy. One of the best news from last week, when you see that a player has come away from the game through injury and you immediately see his face and his concerns and his bad emotions, it’s something that influences me.”
He continued: “I build a very close relationship with my players. That is why I’m really happy to see the ease on a good recovery. Like the agent said, we will see him back this season. I think he is quite close to coming back to training sessions.”

Concern Over Mats Wieffer
While Gomez’s return appears to be on the horizon, there is less clarity regarding Mats Wieffer.
The Dutch midfielder came off in the 18th minute of Brighton’s defeat at Newcastle after aggravating an ankle issue that had already forced him off during the 3–0 win against Chelsea the previous week.
Hurzeler said: “I don’t know yet we will have to wait. It’s his ankle.”
Brighton will now assess the severity of the injury, with hopes that it is not a long-term setback at a crucial point in the season.
With European qualification still within reach, squad availability could prove decisive and while Gomez’s return would be a timely boost, Wieffer’s condition remains one to watch closely in the coming days.
